Prof. dr. F. J. A. (Frans) van der Velden

Frans van der Velden studied Dutch law at Utrecht University Law School and became an assistant and adjunct professor for comparative law and private international law at that law school. His PhD was on uniform sales law. From 1991 to 2006 he was a legal advisor at the Dutch Ministry of Justice, charged with the drafting of legislation on private international law and on nationality law. He represented the Dutch government at the European Union, the Council of Europe and the The Hague Conference on Private International Law. At that time he was a part-time deputy judge at the family law chamber of the ’s-Hertogenbosch Court of Appeal. In 2000 he was appointed extraordinary professor in family law of Dutch minorities by the Amsterdam Free University (VU) and lectured Islamic family law. He was a guest professor on Islamic law at the universities of Leuven en Utrecht and is still lecturing at the Amsterdam Free University (VU) and the Maastricht university. In 2016 he published an introduction to Islamic law (Inleiding in de shari’a; een kennismaking met het recht van de islam en van de islam-georiënteerde wereld (Introduction in the Shari’a: a general view of the law of islam and of that of the islam-oriented world, Boom Juridisch, Den Haag 2016, ISBN 9789462901025).
