Bregje Dijksterhuis is a senior lecturer at the department Legal Theory and Legal History, Vrije University of Amsterdam. Furthermore she gives legal advice to divorcees on child- and spousal support (alimony) at her company Alimentatievraag. She also cooperates with (international) researchers on organising workshops and writing scientific publications. Besides that she conducts commissioned research, gives training and creates website content etc. for legal organisations and -professionals such as the Legal Aid Board, the Child- and spousal Support Agency, attorneys and legal advisors. In 2008 Bregje Dijksterhuis obtained her PhD degree from Leiden University in Sociology of Law. Her thesis Rechters normeren de alimentatiehoogte, delved into an intervention aiming to increase uniformity in judicial decision making: the so called Alimentatienormen. She analysed the establishment and the effectiveness of these guidelines, meant to support judges in the decision making process around the amount of child- and spousal support. For this PhD degree she interviewed judges and attended national judicial meetings, where the guidelines on child- and spousal support were created.
Her main field of expertise are mainly divorce and alimony, but also parenthood and guardianship in case of indebtedness, all from a socio-legal perspective.
