Esther Pan is a part-time researcher at the Vrije University of Amsterdam and attorney at law at the law firm Kennedy Van der Laan. She obtained her PhD from Vrije University in 2006 with a dissertation on the Euthanasia Act. Since 1 October 2015, for one day a week Esther is participating as a researcher in a legal study of VU University into the legal position of incapacitated people, such as older people with dementia, psychiatric patients and mentally handicapped persons. Since 2014 Esther is also a lawyer of the Regional Medical Disciplinary Tribunal in Amsterdam and as per 1 January 2016 she is a general board member of the end-of-life clinic foundation Stichting Levenseindekliniek in The Hague. Her main field of expertise is End-of-life decisions, such as euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide, competency, medical disciplinary law, medical liability, patients’ rights, doctor patient confidentiality, continuing power of attorney.
